Glass No Longer Accepted in Curbside Recycling Program
To improve the quality of single-stream recycling, we will no longer accept glass bottles and jars in curbside recycling bins (effective Oct. 1). This change applies to county collection customers and private haulers.

There are many details at the link below, but a few key points:

There are now two options for recycling glass:
1.) Bring to one of 21 purple recycling containers.
2.) Place used glass in trash.

This glass recycling decision was made in consultation w/ private industry that manages recycling in the county/region, in light of how China has changed its policies for recycled materials.

Glass creates many recycling challenges:
1.) It often breaks in curbside bins and/or when it's transported to a private sorting facility. **Broken glass then contaminates other more valuable items like cardboard and metal, thus those can't be recycled.**
2.) Broken glass damages machinery.

If you bring your glass to a purple bin, then it will be crushed at our glass processing plant in Lorton and actually reused. All colors of clean glass bottles/jars accepted.
