South Flow Alliance for Quiet Skies

Jun 30, 2017

I am the community outreach coordinator for the South Flow Alliance for Quiet Skies (SFA). As you may know, the SFA hosted a meeting along with Supervisor Dan Storck in May to address concerns about the NextGen satellite guided flight path that was implemented in May 2015. This airplane flight path to and from Reagan National Airport (DCA) concentrates aircraft in what amounts to an airplane super highway over a number of highly populated communities in the Mount Vernon area. This has created a major noise problem at all hours of the day and night on many days. Previous to May 2015 these flights flew down the Potomac River for a longer period of time and were on the whole quieter because they were dispersed more evenly over our communities.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will begin a study in August 2017, to look into changing the flight paths so that airplanes will fly further down the Potomac River and they will be at a higher altitude before turning over land, thus reducing the noise levels in our neighborhoods. This proposed plan was developed by the MWAA Working Group and presented to the FAA. The FAA states that they will need approximately two years to develop and create a change in the flight path. The SFA has received support from Don Beyer, Paul Krizek, and Dan Storck, but we still need to continue voicing our concerns while this study is being conducted.

If your community is affected and you would like to voice your concern and/or submit complaints, I am including information that your neighborhood may find useful in voicing your opposition to the current NextGen flight path.

Complaints to the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority (MWAA): https://complaints.bksv.com/dca They keep official complaint records.

Become an active member or attend a meeting of the SFA to see how you can help.

If there is anything the SFA can do to help your neighborhood in this effort, please let me know. The more individuals and communities that are involved, the greater chance we have of effecting change and keeping our skies quieter as they were before the implementation of NextGen in 2015. The next SFA meeting is on July 12th at 7:00 pm in Supervisor Storck’s office on 2511 Parkers Lane Alexandria, VA. We hope to see you there.
