We are excited to share with you some good news about recycling in Fairfax County! We are celebrating Fairfax Recycles Week and kicking off a new Food Waste Composting Program. Details are included in the attached documents, including the latest version of our quarterly newsletter, Fairfax Recycles.
We are also very excited to invite you and your members to a number of upcoming events and activities, including:
A webinar on How to Recycle in Fairfax County; A socially distanced, in-person educational event; and Two grand-opening ribbon-cutting events to celebrate the launch our new food scrap recovery pilot program collection sites.

Newsletter Articles Webinar: How to Recycle Right in Fairfax County On Monday, November 16, from Noon – 1:30pm, Fairfax County’s Employees for Environmental Excellence and the Solid Waste Management Program are co-hosting a webinar on How to Recycle Right in Fairfax County. The webinar is an opportunity to celebrate Fairfax Recycles Day with residents and to learn more about plastics and glass recycling, and a new pilot program that encourages food scraps to be dropped off for composting.
The webinar will feature opening remarks from Supervisors Pat Herrity and Dan Storck, experts from the plastics recycling industry, and county staff. To register, visit this link via the eventbright web platform, or email: recycling@fairfaxcounty.gov for more information.
Fairfax Recycles Day Events Scheduled for November Fairfax County is hosting a number of events and activities for residents this November including a webinar, an educational event, and two ribbon-cutting events to launch a new pilot program that encourages food scraps to be dropped off for composting.
On Monday, November 16, from Noon – 1:30pm, Fairfax County’s Employees for Environmental Excellence and the Solid Waste Management Program (SWMP) are hosting a webinar on How to Recycle Right in Fairfax County. The webinar is an opportunity to celebrate Fairfax Recycles Day with residents and to learn more about plastics and glass recycling, and new pilot program to drop off food scraps for composting.
This educational webinar will feature opening remarks by Fairfax County Supervisors in honor of Fairfax Recycles Day, an expert panel on plastics recycling, an update on the Purple Can Club regional glass recycling program, and an announcement about a new pilot program that encourages food scraps to be dropped off for composting. County staff will also be hosting the following in-person events:
• Monday, November 16, from 2:30pm – 3:30pm @ the I-66 Transfer Station, 4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax, VA 22030. The SWMP will host a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the grand-opening of a new drop off site for food scrap composting. SWMP staff will be handing out a limited number of reusable buckets, with secure lids and a handle, that can be used to transport food scraps to drop off locations.
• Tuesday, November 17, from 10am – 2pm @ the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA 22035. The SWMP will host an education event, featuring environmental education displays and information, the ever-popular “touch-a-truck” event, and the latest star of SWMP’s recycling outreach program, the Glass Monster.
• Wednesday, November 18, from 10am – 11am @ the I-95 Landfill Complex, 9850 Furnace Road, Lorton, VA 22079. The SWMP will host a second ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the grand-opening of a new drop off site for food scrap composting. SWMP staff will be handing out a limited number of reusable buckets, with secure lids and a handle, that can be used to transport food scraps to drop off locations.
These events are open to the public and free of charge. The county and its staff are committed to hosting these events as safely as possible, and we ask all attendees to wear face masks and practice social distancing.

This educational webinar will feature a joint proclamation by several County Board of Supervisors in honor Fairfax Recycles Day, an expert panel on plastics recycling, an update on the Purple Can Club and regional glass recycling efforts, as well as an announcement related to a new food scrap composting drop- off program.
This year, Fairfax County’s Employees for Environmental Excellence (FEEE) and the Solid Waste Management Program’s (SWMP) Outreach and Education Team are partnering to provide this webinar to employees and residents interested in uncovering the mysteries of how recycling really works.
